Deepsywood 2026. 3. 9. 20:14

Hong Kong is usually known for its skyscrapers and busy city life, so camping might not be the first activity that comes to mind.

However, the city is also surrounded by beautiful islands, beaches, and hiking trails where you can enjoy nature. If you're looking for a unique outdoor experience in Hong Kong, Saiyuen Campsite on Cheung Chau Island is a great place to try camping while still staying close to the city.

Saiyuen Campsite is located on Cheung Chau Island, so the first step is getting there by ferry from Central Pier. If you are planning a visit, make sure to check the ferry schedule in advance. The trip from Hong Kong Island to Cheung Chau takes about one hour.

Booking the Campsite

You can reserve a tent at Saiyuen through **Klook or the official Saiyuen website.

In my case, I made the reservation through Klook. If your preferred dates are not available there, you can also book directly on the Saiyuen website. However, prices are usually a little higher on the official site. Communication with the campsite is possible through WhatsApp.

Ferry from Hong Kong Island to Cheung Chau

To reach Cheung Chau Island, take the ferry from Central Pier No. 5. The journey takes around one hour. Since the trip is relatively short, the ferry only offers simple facilities such as a vending machine and restrooms.

Boat from Cheung Chau to Saiyuen

After arriving at Cheung Chau Ferry Pier, walk a short distance to the right. You will find another small pier where small boats with Saiyuen signs operate. These boats usually charge HK$20 per person to take visitors to the campsite. Sometimes private boat owners may offer rides at higher prices like HK$50 or HK$100, so it's good to be aware of the standard price. Don't forget to carry some cash with you.

The boat ride takes around 15–20 minutes, and before you know it, you will arrive at Saiyuen.

After getting off the boat, walk up the hill for a few minutes and you will see the campsite entrance.

African Safari Tent (M)

Maximum capacity: 4 people

Check-in: 15:00 – 19:00
Check-out: 09:30 – 11:30

The campsite opens at 09:30 AM. If there are no guests scheduled before you, early check-in may be possible.

After checking out, you can leave your luggage in the luggage area and continue enjoying the campsite. I reserved the African Safari Tent (M), which can accommodate up to four people. The price through Klook was HK$1,450, which is about USD 185 / KRW 240,000.

Inside the tent you will find: Sleeping beds, Air conditioning, USB charging ports. Outside the tent, there is also a table and four chairs.

BBQ Equipment Rental

We rented some cooking equipment for a barbecue dinner at the campsite. All rental items must be paid in cash.

• Camping stove: HK$120

 Cooking set: HK$150

 Ice box: HK$100

The cooking set includes pots, a frying pan, a ladle, and dishes. The camping stove comes with a butane gas canister. The ice box is filled with plenty of ice, which keeps food and drinks cold throughout the camping stay.

At the public BBQ area, charcoal, plates, tongs, and lighters are also provided. The staff supplies a large bag of charcoal so there is plenty for cooking. Near the tent area and BBQ area, there are showers, toilets, and washing stations. Dishwashing soap and sponges are also available for guests.

You will also find vending machines and water dispensers for both hot and cold water.

There is a small shop near the reception where you can buy drinks, snacks, and frozen food. A microwave is available for heating packaged meals. Shop hours: 09:30 – 18:00. The microwave can only be used during shop hours.

Between the tent area and BBQ area, there is a large grassy field. Visitors can play badminton or simply relax on the grass.

One of the most memorable things was seeing the goats that live at the campsite wandering freely around the field. It seems that the goats are released at specific times during the day.

Although Hong Kong does not have as many camping options as countries like Korea, Saiyuen Campsite offers a fun and unique outdoor experience. If you are looking for a place to escape the busy city and enjoy nature with friends or family, this campsite on Cheung Chau Island is definitely worth considering.
