The Taj Mahal was the place I looked forward to the most during my trip to India. Since Agra is quite far from Delhi, figuring out transportation can be tricky. After some research, I decided to join a sunrise tour—and it turned out to be the best choice. Starting early not only avoids the extreme heat but also lets you experience the Taj Mahal in its most magical light.

Although it’s called a “sunrise tour,” the sun is usually already up by the time you enter. Still, the way sunlight reflects off the white marble creates a breathtaking दृश्य. Seeing the Taj Mahal in person feels completely different from photos—it’s far more impressive and grand.

I booked a private sunrise tour from Delhi through an online platform. The price was around $40–50 per person, including a car, driver, and guide. Entry tickets to the Taj Mahal are not included, but you can purchase them on-site or ask your guide for assistance.

The tour begins with a hotel pickup at around 2:30 AM. Details like the car number and driver’s name are shared in advance, which adds a layer of safety. The drive to Agra takes about 3 to 4 hours, so it’s a good idea to bring snacks, water, and motion sickness medicine if needed.

It took around 3 hours for midnight riding from Delhi to Taj Mahal. I stayed Andaz hotel which is located nearby DEL Airport.

Once you arrive, you’ll transfer to a golf cart that takes you closer to the entrance.

Security checks can be time-consuming, but having a guide makes the process much smoother. There are also dress guidelines, and shoe covers are required if you enter the inner area.

Before reaching the main structure, you’ll pass through a large forecourt. Historically, this space acted as a transitional zone between the everyday world and the sacred grounds of the Taj Mahal.

Entering through the grand gate, the Taj Mahal appears perfectly framed in the archway—one of the most iconic views. The symmetry and scale are truly stunning from this first glimpse.

The entire complex is designed with perfect symmetry. Gardens, reflecting pools, and buildings are aligned around the central tomb, creating a balanced and harmonious layout that looks incredible from every angle.

The structure is made from high-quality white marble sourced from Rajasthan. Depending on the light, the color subtly changes—from bright white to soft pink or golden hues.

The four minarets surrounding the main building are slightly tilted outward, a clever architectural feature designed to protect the structure in case of earthquakes. The central dome rises about 73 meters, showcasing a blend of Islamic and Persian architectural styles.

The Taj Mahal was built during the Mughal Empire under Emperor Shah Jahan. It took around 20 years to complete and required enormous resources, reflecting the empire’s peak in art and architecture.

More than just a monument, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of love. It was built in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, the emperor’s beloved wife, who died during childbirth. Her final wish was for a beautiful tomb—and Shah Jahan fulfilled it.

One of the best photo spots is near the central reflecting pool. Standing in the middle gives you that classic mirrored shot of the Taj Mahal. Arriving early is key if you want fewer crowds in your photos. Many people are lining up to take picture on the spot.

Many tours also include a visit to Agra Fort, another important Mughal site where you can even see the Taj Mahal from a distance. It’s worth adding if you have extra time.

After the tour, you’ll typically stop at a local restaurant. Dishes like butter chicken, palak paneer, and garlic naan are popular choices. Don’t miss mango lassi—it’s refreshing, especially in the heat.
